The effects of thermal noise on the performance of a long-baseline interferometric gravitational wave detector in the 10-50 Hz frequency range are evaluated. It is found that by reducing the seismic cut-off frequency by a factor of 2, an improvement of about sq rt 2 in the SNR can be achieved for the detection of a signal coming from a coalescing binary. It is noted that further improvements in seismic isolation do not yield significantly better performance.
