The old and most metal-poor stars in the halo and thick disk of the Galaxy provide vital clues for unraveling the structure, kinematics, and chemical composition of the early Milky Way. We propose to carry out medium-resolution spectroscopy for new 400 candidates of field very metal-poor (VMP) stars with [Fe/H] ≤ -2.0 in the halo and thick disk. These new VMP candidates have been systematically selected by utilizing the mature data archives of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and we seek to use KPNO 2.1m and CTIO 1.5m telescopes to spectroscopically verify their metallicity and luminosity class. This program will significantly increase the number of identified VMP stars over a range of depths and sky coverage, and provide the astronomy community with a number of VMP stars useful for high-dispersion abundance analysis.
