The PI and several teams of colleagues have underway a number of projects using the HST and its Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) to measure trigonometric parallaxes of astrophysically important stars. These include extreme Population II subgiants, first-overtone Cepheids, white dwarfs, and classical novae. The astrophysics includes comparing the ages of the oldest Pop II stars with the WMAP results, the zero- point of the extragalactic distance scale, calibration of novae as distance indicators and constraining their energetics, and physics of white dwarfs. To convert the FGS parallaxes from relative to absolute, we need to estimate the distances to the surrounding reference stars. This is done through a combination of spectral classification and calibrated photometry. We have obtained classification spectra of all of our reference stars, but the photometry remains uncompleted. In this proposal I am requesting time on the 2.1m telescope with the T2KB direct CCD in order to complete the photometry.
