In addition to its obvious importance in understanding black hole demographics and galaxy dynamics, the correlation between central black hole mass and stellar bulge velocity dispersion [the M(BH)-sigma relationship], is of practical importance in providing the zero-point for reverberation-based black hole masses in AGNs. These, in turn, provide the fundamental mass scale for all quasar mass estimates, upon which are based all studies of the cosmic evolution of BH scaling relations. We propose to observe three high-luminosity PG quasars in order to improve the calibration at the currently under-populated high-mass end of the distribution. These three AGNs are the only high-mass sources for which we have high-quality reverberation mapping-based black hole masses, and for which no reliable stellar velocity dispersion measurements exist. Gemini/NIFS+Altair/LGS is ideally suited for this study, as demonstrated by a feasibility project carried out by our group during the LGS Science Verification phase.
