A method for calculating the orbits of unknown artificial earth satellites on the basis of a small number of optical observations along short arcs is developed within the framework of the generalized problem of two fixed centers. The vectors of position and velocity are determined in the initial space-time, taking full account of the flattening of the earth and partial account of its asymmetry relative to the equatorial plane. The resulting system of equations is shown to be linear for the unknowns chosen, and can be solved numerically using third-order determinants.
