The values of the masses of the equilibrium configurations of neutron stars are analyzed within the framework of the standard nine-parameter post-Newtonian (PPN) theories of gravitation.
The traditional approach imposes constraints on the PPN parameters via experimental tests. In this paper, further constraints on the numerical values of these parameters are imposed by basic conservation laws, such as the conservation of each component of the four-momentum of an isolated system. As a consequence we are able to establish in the PPN formalism the existence of a critical mass for the equilibrium configurations of neutron stars.
