Four absorption systems have been identified in the spectrum of the high-redshift quasar OQ 172. A reliable redshift of 2.07010, a very probable one of 2.56312, and two probable ones of 0.17546 and 0.17910 are determined by astrophysical analysis. A Monte Carlo method is used to confirm the theoretical model for calculating the probability of random identification. Selection effects, the combination of statistical test and SNR filter, and the effects of erroneous and missed identifications are discussed.
