A new method for treating multiplets in non-LTE calculations is presented, the basic idea of which is to estimate the radiation field of weaker component lines from that of the strongest component to be treated exactly. This method is incorporated in a non-LTE program based on the equivalent-two-level-atom formulation and applied to a test calculation using a simple model Fe I atom with model stellar atmospheres corresponding to spectral types A and F. It is shown that this improved treatment of multiplet increases the departure coefficient of higher excitation levels connected radiatively to lower levels in upper atmospheric layers by several tens percent due to the increased pumping caused by the inclusion of weaker components, as compared to the conventional treatment.
