High-dispersion spectroscopic observations of binary and multiple stars will result in accurate radial velocities, lithium abundances, spectral classifications, magnitude differences, and rotational velocities. Analysis of the radial velocities produces the spectroscopic orbital elements of each system. Such elements combined with visual elements result in the masses and absolute magnitudes of the components and the distance to the system. The orbital parallaxes are typically more accurate than those determined by Hipparcos, providing an independent check of Hipparcos results. The derived basic parameters of the stars can be compared to theoretical evolutionary models, while other quantities can be compared to theories of binary- and multiple-star formation.
