Recent observations of Messier 82 have provided evidence refuting the hypothesis that the galaxy has undergone a relatively recent explosion. Observations revealing partial polarization of the alpha-hydrogen line and a nitrogen line emitted by M82 suggest that light crossing the center of the galaxy is scattered by dust particles. Maps of the distribution of neutral hydrogen around M82 and the neighboring galaxy M81 indicate that the gas floating around M82 was torn from M81 by the tidal effect during a recent close passage of the two galaxies.
