Isotope and elemental abundance studies of the Brownfield H3 chondrite have revealed the presence of Cd with an anomalous isotopic composition. The Cd was consistently fractionated relative to the laboratory standard, with an enrichment in the heavier isotopes. Double-spike measurements show that recognized sources of isotopic discrimination such as chemical processing and mass spectrometry could not be the cause of the observed isotope fractionation. The anomalous Cd was also found in a sample of the H3 chondrite Tieschitz; both the fractionation and Cd concentration of this meteorite were highly variable. It is suggested that the multiple desorption process proposed by Arrhenius and Alfven (1970), involving impingement, diffusion, and desorption from the solid surfaces of a growing condensate, may be responsible for the isotope fractionation of Cd. Alternatively, fractionation may have occurred during trapping of gases from the solar nebula (Lewis et al., 1976).
