Galaxies obtain material to form their stars from the intergalactic medium, but direct observations of such accretion do not yet exist. The best candidates for gas-accreting galaxies are extended Lyα sources, the so-called Lyα blobs. However, there is controversy over their true origin(s) because 1) the lack of a large, blind survey for Lyα blobs has precluded unbiased measurement their distribution of properties and 2) there are many intrinsic ambiguities in interpreting Lyα emission. To resolve these issues, we undertaken a two-stage program. First, we propose to obtain a new sample of Lyα blobs from very deep narrow-band imaging using CTIO 4m+MOSAIC and our custom-made filter. This survey will yield not only the first constraints on blob number density, luminosity, and size outside known clustered regions, but also the the largest ( 500) and lowest redshift sample of Lyα emitters. Second, having identified Lyα blobs, we will target them again for H(alpha) and heha, lines that, if detected, will distinguish gas-accreting forming galaxies from other sources of extended Lyα emission such as superwinds, AGNs, and star formation. Here we propose to complete the first, narrow-band imaging stage of the program in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. Combined with the survey time awarded us in the 2007A semester, which has already revealed one large, bright Lyα blob candidate, the additional allocation proposed here will allow us to complete our survey of the Chandra Deep Fields with meaningful statistics.
