It is argued that stellar masses deduced from a relation involving only photometrically derived values for the surface gravity, effective temperature, and bolometric magnitude of a given star represent only lower limits. The source of error is shown to lie in the fact that the surface gravity determined from photometry is not necessarily the actual surface gravity, especially for metal-poor red giants. It is also shown that masses determined in the same way for giants and supergiants will also be erroneous because the value of the radius corresponding to the effective temperature need not be the same as that for which the surface gravity has been computed.
