This dissertation presents the results of molecular spectral line observations of star formation and mass outflow from young stars in molecular clouds. The NGC 1333 star formation region has been surveyed for molecular outflows. The author has made the first detailed molecular line investigation of the infrared source NGC 1333/IRAS 1. The strucure of the molecular outflow associated with HH 7-11 in NGC 1333 has been studied by applying image processing techniques to molecular line observations, and the relationship between the outflowing molecular gas and the Herbig-Haro objects investigated. The first molecular line study of the HH 52-54 region has been made. A very massive and dense molecular outflow associated with the highly luminous infrared source IRAS 20188+3928 has been discovered.
