Flashes of light seen on the Moon were once regarded as a class of Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLP) that could never be confirmed. However since 1999, amateur astronomers, and later NASA's Marshall Spaceflight Center, have obtained multiple recordings confirming over 100 instances of impact flashes. The study of impact flash magnitudes, and the eventual determination of their crater locations and diameters can provide vital input data to help determine the optical energy / kinetic energy conversion ratio of impacts. This abstract reviews current and possible Earth and space-based impact flash detection methods.
