In this apparition, the pattern of the belts was very unusual: STB and NTB were both virtually absent, whereas NEB was greatly broadened to the north. In the second half of the apparition, dark and bright spots in the northern NEB became conspicuous. There were few other major features on the planet. Even the EZ was exceptionally quiet. However, there were substantial outbreaks of dark spots on the SEBs and the NNTBs jetstreams. In both jetstreams, some spots became unusually large and their speeds became variable. Eventually, both the SEBs activity and the long-running SEBZ activity following the Great Red Spot came to an end, and a new South Tropical Band emerged p the Great Red Spot. High resolution photographs also revealed small dark spots moving on the SSTBn jetstream, which had never before been observed from Earth.
