Deconvolution of astronomical images by the method of maximum entropy is described and the algorithm applied to observations of the optical jet in M87. The importance of the application of such techniques to data obtained with the Space Telescope is emphasized. The chi squared statistic is used to indicate the quality of the fit, and the configurational entropy is used to identify the most likely trial map from all those giving similar values of chi squared. The noise residuals are further constrained to match their known statistical distribution. The deconvoluted image is in good qualitative agreement with the structure seen on high resolution very large array radio maps at 5 and 15 GHz.
