The recorded correspondence of the the Great Melbourne Telescope of 1868 includes many interesting suggestions of which only a few were incorporated in the final design of a reflecting telescope, which was, itself, less than fully successful (Gasgoigne 1996). This note describes an equatorial mounting proposed by one of the most original of 19th Century astronomers, Charles Piazzi Smyth, in a design that has never been followed up or even fully described in subsequent literature.
