The view of large-scale structure in the universe has evolved considerably over the last decade as the prevalence of large superclusters and voids has become more apparent. Highlights of the observational steps that led to this new picture are presented, including efforts to map the distribution of galaxies and, through their peculiar motions, the distribution of dark matter on large scales. Comparison of these two maps for the local volume show rough agreement, though it is still not clear if luminous galaxies trace the distribution of dark matter with any precision.
