IRAS09002 - 4732 was studied at 0.7-18 microns by means of new observations using the 2.2-m telescope at ESO and with data from the IRAS point-source catalog. The entire region was found to be highly obscured, with visual extinctions of between 14 and 35 mag deduced. The extinction in front of IRAS09002 - 4732 itself was rated even higher. A near infrared source was found which could be identified with the IRAS-source and which is surrounded by a compact halo. The spectrophotometric intensity distribution of IRAS09002 - 4732 can be fitted to an O7 ZAMS star heating an optically thick dust cocoon. It is surrounded by an optically thin envelope of constant dust density and decreasing temperature according to T exp -0.4. An infrared reflection nebula was found about 7 arcsec southeast of the IRAS-source; it represents the higher obscured region of the optical nebula. There is steeply increasing reddening toward the IRAS-source.
