It is demonstrated that the contribution of projection effects to the dispersion of virial mass-to-light ratios for groups of galaxies may be considerably larger than previously believed, especially if the number of dynamically relevant members is small, as is frequently the case. It is also shown that earlier estimates are vitiated by several incorrect approximations, which leads to an overestimate of the uncertainty associated with the determination of the virial radius and to an underestimate of that pertinent to the velocity dispersion.
