The application of the method of fictitious observations to numerical satellite orbit computations is discussed. The method involves the computation of a set of fictitious observations corresponding to the solution of the satellite motion equation with a simplified force function corresponding to that of the generalized problem of two fixed gravitational centers. The fictitious observations generated by a numerical integration of the true motion equation and an analytical integration of the fictitious motion equation may then be used to advantage in differential orbit correction if more than one iteration is required and the fictitious observations do not need to be regenerated in each iteration. The method of fictitious observations may also be used in the generation of a multiple arc definitive orbit which allows the testing of the quality of individual orbital arcs. Comparisons of CPU time required for orbital computations based on purely numerical procedures using different programs reveal that the application of the fictitious observations method to satellite orbit improvement can lead to savings of up to 25 percent in processing time without losses in accuracy.
