A stellar wind expanding in a geometry which diverges faster than radial can have more than one critical point. Such geometries have been observed in coronal holes in the solar corona. The choice of the appropriate critical point is discussed in terms of the mechanical energy balance of the wind with a prescribed temperature structure. This treatment leads to the definition of a dividing geometry for a given temperature distribution. If the actual geometry lies completely outside the dividing geometry the stellar wind solution will flow through the inner critical point. If the actual geometry lies inside the dividing geometry, even for a small region, the stellar wind solution will flow through the outer critical point.
