The H-R diagrams of a large sample of open clusters within approximately 2 kpc of the sum are analyzed to estimate their metal abundances. The metal content is confirmed to vary with the galactic radius. The average metal abundance in the solar neighborhood is also estimated to be log(Z/X) = -1.547 + or - 0.036, which corresponds to Z(solar radius) = 0.020 + or - 0.002. In addition, some indication is found for the gradient to become shallower in the direction of the galactic center and to steepen in the outer parts of the Galaxy. Evidence for a systematic variation in the metal abundance with galactic radius is also found from an analysis of the O-type star distribution in the Sagittarius spiral arm.
