Collisional heating of an interplanetary dust grain by solar energetic particles and the sputtering process that follows such collisions are studied for grain materials of water-ice, obsidian, and magnetite. It is found that because of the size dependence of the absorption property of a grain for incident photons the ratio of heating rate by solar particles to that by solar photons increases as the radius of the grain decreases. However, this ratio is somewhat smaller than unity, e.g., only about 0.01 even for a small grain with a radius of 0.01 micron, and consists of transparent materials in the visible range. Compared with the strong size dependence of the mass loss rate of a grain per unit surface due to sublimation, the mass loss rate due to sputtering is independent of grain radius; furthermore, its gradual decrease with solar distance is greater than that due to sublimation.
