The optical-variability time scales, typical flare energies, and bolometric luminosities are determined for a number of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. Dependences of the time scale of variability on the nuclear luminosity and mass are presented. The upper limit to the dimensions of the optically variable region is estimated to be 100 to 1000 times the gravitational radius of the central body.
