A new class of astronomical objects has lately been discovered: binary systems with compact X-ray sources. In analyzing their properties, scientists concluded that such sources could be the neutron stars or black holes, predicted earlier by the theories of relativity and stellar evolution. A popular description is given of these unusual objects, which have significantly developed certain concepts in the field of astrophysics.
