Since 1970 the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory has had an active program to obtain infrared celestial survey data with advanced cryogenically cooled sensors flown on sounding rockets. A total of twelve successful experiments have been flown with a variety of sensors and survey colors. To date over ninety percent of the sky has been mapped at an effective wavelength of 11 microns. Somewhat smaller areas have been surveyed in three other infrared colors. Plans are to fly a large aperture sensor and re-survey at least sixty percent of the celestial sphere at increased sensitivity.
