The theory of stellar evolution as it has developed from 1795 to the present is reviewed. Discussions are presented on the critical mass for neutron star collapse and on the nature of planetary orbits. The orbital mechanics of photons in the equatorial plane of a nonrotating black hole is considered. Special attention is paid to the formation of a storage-ring of photons - a circular photon orbit - about the black hole. The case of a rotating black hole and the centrifugal motion of photons is examined, and the formation and destruction of satellites of black holes is discussed.
