The contribution of local gamma ray production to the gamma ray flux arriving at large angles to the galactic plane is assessed by calculating the differential and integral spectral flux from directions observed by the SAS-2 satellite. Bremsstrahlung and neutral pion decay in the interstellar gas and inverse Compton scattering of low energy starlight and black-body photons are taken into account, in addition to the final angular resolution of the gamma ray detector. For gamma rays of energy greater than 100 MeV, the locally produced component becomes dominant, implying a steeper spectrum for extragalactic gamma rays than has been previously expected.
