The paper reviews the main satellite features which influenced the design of the Ariel-5 post launch control and data handling system and describes some aspects of ground control center operations, particularly the tasks of satellite command operations, real time operations and off-line data processing. The satellite features discussed are the orbital parameters, data storage on the satellite, telemetry formats (dump and real time), satellite commanding, the X-ray experiments and satellite control (spin rate, attitude and attitude drift). Satellite command operations are carried out using the Spacecraft Command Encoder designed around a Honeywell 316 computer and interfaced to a 7.2 kb/s data-link circuit. Real time operations are conducted via a closed control loop using a voice circuit between the control center and ground station operators. As for the off-line data processing, the data collected on digital tape on the PDB 8/I computer is processed on an ICL 1904A computer to provide a daily data package for each X-ray experiment.
