Since the ordinary ray trace of topside ionograms is usually well defined and reasonably horizontal near the extraordinary ray cut-off frequency fxS, it is proposed that the virtual depth of the ordinary ray be scaled at this frequency. It is shown that this depth gives a useful measure of the scale height at the height of the satellite, enabling estimates of the scale height without knowledge of the gyrofrequency. The scaled depth is adequate for locating the latitudes of major features in the topside ionosphere, such as the change from H+ to O+ near the plasmapause or the temperature peak beneath the magnetosphere cleft.
