Strange modes appear when the pulsation energy is strongly confined in a region where the radiation pressure is much larger than the gas pressure. Strange-mode instability, which occurs in an extremely nonadiabatic environment, generates a pair of a strongly excited mode and a strongly damped mode. This is caused by a significant phase difference between pressure and density maximum. The strange-mode instability seems responsible for complex light variations of luminous H-deficient stars such as R CrB stars and extreme-helium B stars. It is also suggested that strange modes are involved in pulsations in Wolf-Rayet stars, Luminous Blue Variables, and F-supergiant variables.
