Atomic diffusion in a star modifies the concentration of elements in layers where mixing motions are weak or inexistent. How much local abundances could depart from what they would be if the star were entirely mixed (outside the core) will depend on the balance between gravitational and radiative accelerations. The latter are far from negligible as long as elements are not fully ionized. While gravity varies smoothly with radius inside the star, radiative accelerations have complex behavior and wide variations (roughly from 10^{-1} to 10^{3} times the gravity) in a large portion of the star. According to their type and evolutionary stage, many stars may be significantly affected by atomic diffusion, through abnormal superficial composition and/or structural changes.
