Infrared solar radiation is, in almost every case, formed in thermal equilibrium and provides true kinetic temperatures. Absolute measurements now cover the range from 1 to 1000 microns with improved accuracy. Center-to-limb variations at a number of wavelengths have been obtained on the ground, with balloons, or aircraft and contribute to improved models up to the chromosphere. Progress in imaging techniques has allowed the mapping of fine structures and active regions. The spectrum of the quiet sun is mostly characterized by molecular lines which are extremely temperature sensitive and can be used to probe temperature and abundance fluctuations in granulation or active regions. The structure of the corona can be probed with fine-structure lines. The near-F-corona composition has been studied, and the nature and concentration of dust is better known.
