The High Throughput X-ray Spectroscopy (HTXS) mission is under study for flight during the first decade of the next century. This paper provides a status report of the on-going optimization of the mission design including spacecraft, orbit, launch vehicle, mission operations, and instruments. The scientific instrumentation consists of two co-aligned X-ray telescope systems with the corresponding detectors. The Spectroscopic X-ray Telescope (SXT) covers the 0.25 to 12 keV band with a spectral resolution of more than 300 and an effective area of about 1.5 m* *2 at 1 keV. A Hard X-ray Telescope (HXT) system will also use focusing optics to extend the bandpass up to at least 40 keV. Six identical spacecraft will be launched within about two years on a Delta 2-class launch vehicle. An extendable optical bench is a key supporting technology for this mission so that launch vehicles of modest size can be used. A light-weight dewar with a lifetime of 5 years is another key supporting technology.
