This paper describes some of the history of the Figaro data reduction system. Figaro uses hierarchical data structures to provide flexibility in its data file formats, and these have changed over the years requiring the provision of more abstract data access routines. Figaro applications are now much easier to write, and are able to provide easy access to such things as data quality and error information. Applications are now able to be invoked in a variety of ways and on an increasing variety of machines.
