Ion irradiation of ice mixtures produces several effects among which structural changes of the ice and the formation of other species both more volatile and refractory not present in the original target. We have studied, by infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, the formation of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO_2) after ion (3 keV He^+, 15 keV O^+, 1.5 keV H^+) irradiation of astrophysically relevant ice mixtures containing H_2O, CH_3OH, CH_4, CO_2, CO, O_2, N_2. Laboratory experiments have shown that both CO and CO_2 are easily produced, irrespective of the original mixture containing C and O. Moreover, the structural characteristics of the ice mixtures change as shown by the profile (shape, width and peak position) of the IR bands.
