As seen in the present 2D bi-ion MHD model of the Mars magnetosheath, the strong coupling between protons and planetary ions causes many distinctive effects, such as a heavy ion discontinuity representing the outer boundary of a region where heavy ions and protons have nearly equal mass densities. Because of the intense coupling between both flows, ray-structured multiple bi-ion discontinuities are generated. These features are substantially confirmed by comparison with the plasma observations of Phobos 2.
