It is seen in Phobos 2 plasma measurements of Mars that solar wind deceleration upstream of the terminator bow shock is greater on the dusk than the dawn side. By contrast, the solar wind at Earth is most significantly decelerated upstream of the quasi-parallel bow shock in the foreshock region. It is concluded that for both Earth and Mars, the solar wind deceleration upstream of the bow shock varies according to magnetic fluctuation magnitudes.
