A previously suggested optical identification of the compact radio source 3C 318 with a faint red N galaxy is confirmed. A pair of faint interacting galaxies nearby may be associated with the compact galaxy. The sum of 12 spectroscopic observations of 3C 318 shows two emission features, which are identified as Mg II at 2799 A and the O II forbidden line at 3727 A at a redshift of 0.752. A two-component model for 3C 318 is briefly discussed.
