It is now widely understood that a realistic description of the process of particle acceleration at non relativistic shock waves needs to take into account the dynamical reaction of the accelerated particles. The violations of the test particle approximation may in fact become very evident and lead to strong modifications of the shock structure. The most successful approach to this complex problem is currently based on kinetic theories, which are able to describe the thermodynamics of the shocked plasmas and at the same time the spectrum of the accelerated particles. Here we describe quantitatively the most important effects of the shock modification. In particular we describe the first attempts at generalizing the kinetic theory to introduce the effects of self-generation of waves able to scatter the particles and contribute an amplification of the local magnetic field in the upstream region. The implications of this approach to the calculation of the maximum momentum achieved by the accelerated particles are discussed.
