In this review I provide an overview of the acceleration of fast particles in astrophysical plasmas. To give the review a focus, I look back several decades to identify then outstanding problems, and ask how we have progressed in resolving these problems. Topics covered in the review will include: the scattering and acceleration of Galactic cosmic rays, stochastic acceleration, power-law energy spectra, shock acceleration, acceleration of relativistic electrons in synchrotron sources, auroral electrons, acceleration in solar flares, and preferential acceleration of ions.
