We present results from a detailed millimeter/near--infrared study of the NGC 6334 I/I(North) region. Our map in the HC_3N (J = 15 -> 14) transition confirms the existence of two massive dense cores previously detected in submillimeter continuum observations. The southern core is a well known region of star formation, containing a molecular outflow, a young cluster, a number of masers, and an ultracompact Hii region. On the basis of JHK--band imaging and Fabry--Perot line imaging in the Br-gamma and H_2 S(1) (1 -> 0) lines, we argue that the southern core contains two bipolar outflows; one originating from the ultracompact Hii region and one originating from a luminous mid--infrared source. We also find that the northern core exhibits broad wings in the SiO (J = 3 -> 2) and CO (J = 1 -> 0) transitions; indicative of an outflow from a massive young stellar object. In contrast to the southern core, the northern core has not been detected at wavelengths less than 100 mu m. Consequently, the source of the outflow must be deeply embedded and may be one of the youngest examples of high mass star formation known to date. Furthermore, our K--band images do not show an embedded cluster towards the northern core; suggesting that the onset of high mass formation can precede the appearance of embedded clusters of low mass stars.
