The observation of hot ions in: (1) the high altitude ionosphere, (2) at 1 earth radius along the auroral zone magnetic fields, (3) near the equatorial plane in the inner magnetosphere, (4) in the distant tail, and (5) in the magnetospheric boundary regions, are reviewed, giving attention to the relations of ions to electrons. Substorm dependence of the keV ion distribution in the upper ionosphere over the polar caps is discussed and it was found that the hot plasma in the region over the polar caps was swept away by the substorm and then returned during the recovery phase from the precipitation zone. In conclusion, it was determined that important solar cycle variations in the processes may exist that determine the pitch angle distribution of the precipitated auroral ions, suggesting that these variations are not only important for the occurrence probability of disturbed magnetospheric conditions but also for the balance between various physical processes that affect the hot magnetospheric plasma.
