A local relation between the surface density and the gravitational potential for a disk distribution of mass is derived. The solution is explicitly evaluated and discussed in view of its relevance to recent developments in the density wave theory of the spiral structure in galactic dynamics. This formal asymptotic solution has been tested numerically and found to be rather accurate even when the radial wavelengths are no longer so short (i.e., relatively open spirals).
