An SIT vidicon system has been built for use in spectroscopy and direct imaging. The SIT is operated in an integrating mode with a slow-scan readout. The pixel format is optimized for the particular application, being 128 x 512 pixels for spectra and 256 x 256 pixels for direct frames. A scan converter allows immediate viewing of the data.
Methods of data reduction are described. Absolute photometry and spectrophotometry can be done to an accuracy of 4%, while for spectra pixel-to-pixel fluctuations can be as low as 3% on individual frames. Wavelength calibrations are better than 0.1 pixel.
Provision has been made for the future addition of a TV acquisition viewer which will share the scan converter with the SIT. The viewer will be used for object acquisition with the spectrograph.
