A variety of long-period variable (LPV) stars were observed in order to compare H-delta emission with microwave maser emission. The stars include representatives of the S-type stars and carbon stars; the LPVs and S stars both have some members that show masing activity in the circumstellar shells and others that apparently do not. No correlation between hydrogen emission and maser activity was found. Some of the masing LPVs have H-delta in emission and some in absorption. For each group there is a correlation between equivalent width and phase.
