It is suggested that progressive bending of radio waves by a suitably located intervening clump of matter (e.g., a galaxy) can produce the appearance of superluminal component separation at an extragalactic radio source. Salient features of the proposed differential-bending mechanism are examined in the framework of Newtonian gravitation. The plausibility, merits, and demerits of this mechanism are considered, along with the possibility that bending may occur in the dense nuclear region of the radio source itself.
