The results of inversions of infrared spectral measurements indicate that there exist temperature structures in the region of the temperature minimum at about 0.1 bar which are significantly different from radiative models. It is demonstrated that this difference can be accounted for in terms of errors in the retrieved temperature structures caused by the lack of observations which adequately define the thermal structure in the lower stratosphere.
